Support That Goes the Distance — Since 1961
Every September, our off-duty firefighters hit the streets for the Fill the Boot campaign, raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Together with our community, we’re helping families access vital care, equipment, and hope—one boot at a time.
About: Fundraising for Community
Every September, off-duty members of the Powell River Firefighters Charity suit up in uniform and take to the streets for a cause that’s been close to our hearts for over six decades. Since 1961, we’ve proudly supported Muscular Dystrophy Canada through the annual Fill the Boot campaign — a national fundraiser led by firefighters across the country to support individuals and families affected by neuromuscular disorders
In Powell River, you’ll find us outside local grocery stores — Save-On-Foods, Walmart, Quality Foods, and FreshCo — standing beside our boots, collecting donations from generous community members. Whether it’s a handful of coins or a folded-up bill, every contribution dropped into the boot helps fund critical research, specialized equipment, and essential support services for Canadians living with muscular dystrophy.
Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of genetic disorders that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. While there is currently no cure, the support raised through Fill the Boot campaigns goes a long way in helping individuals live with greater independence, dignity, and quality of life.
It’s more than just a fundraiser — it’s a tradition rooted in compassion, solidarity, and service. From the early days when firefighters like Ed Stride and D. Morgan stood with boots in hand, to today’s new generation of fire fighters, the mission remains the same: to help carry the load for those who need it most.
Thanks to the generosity of the Powell River community, we continue to raise meaningful support year after year. Your donation — no matter the size — helps Muscular Dystrophy Canada go the distance for those facing some of life’s toughest challenges.

The Powell River Professional Fire Fighters have been proud supporters of this cause since 1961, dedicating their off-duty time each September to the Fill the Boot campaign. Every donation collected helps support individuals and families living with neuromuscular disorders across the country.
