Fire Safety House - Where kids learn to stay safe

We guide local students through realistic safety drills inside a mobile, two-storey model home—teaching them how to spot hazards, stay calm, and get out safely in the event of a fire.
About: Fire Safety House

Every child deserves to feel safe — and to know what to do in an emergency. That’s why the Powell River Firefighters Charity is proud to bring fire prevention to life through our Fire Safety House, a hands-on learning experience designed specifically for young students.

Built by the Powell River Professional Fire Fighters with support from local businesses and citizens, the Fire Safety House is a mobile, two-storey model home equipped to simulate real-life fire scenarios in a safe, controlled environment. Complete with a kitchen, bedrooms, smoke alarms, and a control room that produces theatrical smoke and strobe lighting, the house offers students a realistic environment where they can learn how fires behave — and how to respond safely.

Each year, off-duty firefighters volunteer their time to welcome Grade 3 students from across the qathet School District, guiding them through age-appropriate fire drills and practical safety lessons. Children learn how to spot common household hazards, respond to smoke alarms, crawl under simulated smoke, and practice safe escape routes.

These lessons are more than just memorable — they’re essential. Research shows that children under 10 are at a greater risk of fire-related injury and death, largely due to a lack of experience, physical ability, or understanding of how to respond. Programs like this help fill that gap early, empowering kids with confidence, knowledge, and practical tools they can carry for life.

Delivered alongside classroom presentations, the Fire Safety House reinforces core fire safety messages in a way that feels fun, engaging, and unforgettable. It’s also an opportunity for students to connect with local firefighters, ask questions, and build trust with the people who serve and protect them

At the Powell River Firefighters Charity, we believe education is one of the most powerful tools we have in keeping our community safe. By reaching kids early — and showing them what to do, not just telling them — we’re helping prevent tragedy, protect families, and build a safer Powell River for generations to come..

Built in 2000 with support from local businesses and community members, the mobile unit has reached hundreds of students across the region, bringing important safety lessons to life — and it’s still going strong today.

What started as a community-built teaching tool has become a cornerstone of local fire safety outreach. With every school visit, off-duty firefighters continue to share knowledge, build trust, and help the next generation stay safe.
