Supporting the Long Journey of Burn Recovery

Burn injuries can have lasting physical and emotional effects.
Through our support of the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, we help ensure survivors have access to the care, resources, and community support they need.
About: Supporting Burn Survivors

The Powell River Firefighters Charity is dedicated to supporting the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, a registered charity established in 1978 by the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association. This partnership underscores our commitment to assisting burn survivors and promoting fire prevention within our community.

The Burn Fund offers a comprehensive range of services aimed at supporting burn survivors and their families throughout their recovery journey. One of its key initiatives is the Burn Fund Centre, which provides short-term accommodations—a “home away from home”—for individuals and families traveling to Vancouver for medical treatment related to burn and major trauma injuries. This facility ensures that patients and their loved ones have a comfortable place to stay during critical times

In addition to housing, the Burn Fund organizes programs like the Burn Camp, hosting young burn survivors aged 6 to 18 for a week each July. Since its inception in 1994, the camp has welcomed nearly 1,000 children from BC and the Yukon, providing them with an opportunity to connect with peers who have experienced similar challenges. Activities such as kayaking, rafting, and arts and crafts help build self-confidence and foster a sense of community among participants

The Burn Fund also emphasizes prevention and education through initiatives like the “Too Hot for Tots!” program, designed to teach parents and caregivers how to prevent burn and scald injuries in the home. Furthermore, the annual Burn Awareness Week engages elementary schools in promoting fire and burn safety, encouraging students to participate in activities that enhance their understanding of these critical issues

By supporting the Burn Fund, the Powell River Firefighters Charity contributes to these vital programs, ensuring that burn survivors receive the care, resources, and community support they need. Our collaboration reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the lives of those affected by burn injuries and to promoting safety and prevention within our community.
